Beyond the usual spots

As travel gets easier, most of the well-known spots are usually teeming with tourists. If in 2025 you’re looking for something different, why not give some lesser-known but equally fascinating destinations a try? The hidden gems we included in this list offer one-of-a-kind experiences which are totally different from the usual tourist paths.

Norway

When people think of Norway, they think of the fjords of the west coast or the international city of Oslo. But northern Norway has some of the most spectacular and undiscovered landscapes in Europe. The Lofoten Islands and their jagged mountains, beaches, and beautiful fishing villages, feel like a world away from the contemporary world. Winters bring the Arctic skies burning with the Northern Lights, and summers offer infinite days under the Midnight Sun. Nature lovers here have plenty of activities to practice like hiking, kayaking, or even whale-watching.

Bolivia

Although its neighbors, like Peru and Brazil, get millions of visitors, Bolivia remains a secret paradise. The country’s most famous attraction, Salar de Uyuni, is the world’s largest salt flat, creating an otherworldly mirror effect after the rains. The Amazon rainforest, multicolored Laguna Colorada, and the Valley of the Moon near La Paz make this country a paradise portal. The ruins of Tiwanaku provide a fascinating pre-Inca culture.

Cambodia

Most visitors come to Cambodia to see the beautiful temples of Angkor Wat, but it’s not her only secret to reveal. Head to the Cardamom Mountains, home to dense rainforests, waterfalls, and tropical wildlife. The southern coast,  with Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem offers a more intimate and secluded alternative to Thailand’s busier islands. For culture, the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake provide a glimpse into traditional Cambodian life.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is not only about the white sand and incredibly pristine beaches, and there is much more to this island off the Tanzanian coast than a suntan.  Beyond the throngs of tourists, the Jozani Forest is a habitat for endangered red colobus monkeys, and the Mnemba Atoll is perfect for snorkeling and diving. Discover the Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is full of ancient buildings, markets, and Swahili culture.  Blend the tropical with the modern and relax in the exclusive hotels in Zanzibar, with the breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.

Algeria

One of the most neglected countries in North Africa, Algeria is a hidden paradise for adventurers. The Sahara Desert covers the majority of the country, with its spectacular sand dunes and impressive rock formations in the Tassili n’Ajjer National Park. The Roman remains of Timgad and Djemila, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are Italy’s equal but are virtually unknown to mass tourism. Its capital, Algiers, is a lively city with a mix of French colonial and traditional Arabic architecture and so makes for a fascinating cultural visit.

All of these countries promise adventure, culture, and unforgettable scenery. Discovering each destination will give you a truly enriching perspective on the modern world. So, step off the most famous destinations and discover the world’s best-kept secrets.
